SANDRINE ALAIN
Architect • Guiding-architect
Sandrine is a French architect based in Cape Town for more than twelve years, passionate by travels. architecture, design, arts and cultures.
In 2010, my family and I decided to explore parts of Africa and Asia., discovering and observing various kind of Vernacular Architecture from the Dogon to the nomads people in Southern Africa .
We went on a two year family road-trip during which I developed a fascination with indigenous , vernacular architecture. We explored a wide range of African cultures, observing, drawing their different ways of building.
I was extremely fortunate to study "les cultures constructives" with Patrice Doat at ENSAG (founder of CRAterre in Grenoble -France ).
In addition, I had always had a curiosity about other cultures and a desire to travel. It was Patrice who encouraged this desire to explore architecture & culture in other countries and to travel widely.
So in 2010 we set off on our Nomad Family Road Trip.
It was for us a unique and wonderful experience which opened our minds and dramatically changed our views of life and peoples.
We came to rest in Cape Town, felt in love with the energy and beauty of the mother city and with South Africa, and decided to settle here.
This odyssey is continuing here in Cape Town in the form of my own personal future project involving the handcraft knowledge and practice of local women, and sharing my knowledge about Art, Design and Architecture in Capetown with tourists.
By passion, she loves to share her knowledge about architecture and to meet artists, architects and designers.
